Naomi Kavka
January–February 2025
Naomi Kavka is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Smithers, BC. A classically trained cellist, vocalist, and guitar player, Kavka brings a myriad of influences to her songs, forming a daring indie-rock sound that is musically polished, lyrically visceral, and emotionally raw. Her songs come from the unique perspective of a queer woman, a child of a refugee, a resident of the precipice of the wilderness of Canada.
Kavka’s band, Geoff McFarlane (Handsome Eli) Ian Olmstead (Alex Cuba), Jake Jenne (Aerialists), and Jordy Walker, deftly support her as they perform deeply intimate, political, and cathartic songs. Brought together by soundscapes and comradery, they blend their backgrounds of jazz, classical music, folk traditions, and rock to communicate complex emotional landscapes. Their latest album "Then and Now" (June 2024) is a collection of 8 songs produced by Jordy Walker. Ranging from driving indie jams, melancholic ballads, snarky anthems, and art rock improvisations, "Then and Now" demonstrates Kavka's fearlessness and range as a performer and songwriter.
The Similkameen Artist Residency was absolutely wonderful.
I was left wanting nothing! My quarters were comfortable and easy to settle into. My studio space was adaptable to my needs as a sound artist. The surroundings are dynamic and inspiring. As someone who loves the outdoors, the property and adjacent areas provided ample space for exploration from which I drew much inspiration. The shared living areas included a kitchen and modern appliances that allowed me to cook whatever I pleased! Whether the cabin had just me in it, or was full of other artists, it felt comfortable and homey. The nearest town, Keremeos, had a surprisingly well stocked grocery store, and I was able to buy most things I wanted from there. Ali, the onsite coordinator, is thoughtful, helpful, and a lovely neighbour. We had inspiring conversations about our work, among other things. They truly encouraged me in my practise, and made me feel like I really belonged here. Ali also helped me get out into the community and plan performances, and find students during my time here. The artists I shared the space with were exciting, kind, and a joy to spend time with. I got the strong impression that a great deal of thought went into most details of the residency.
The time I spent at the residency was restorative in ways I did not expect. I was able to produce a significant body of work to carry forward to my next album. I was also able to find a creative rhythm and habits that I believe I can carry forward into my day to day life as a busy touring artist. This residency is a gift, and the opportunity to spend time here was truly magical. I highly recommend this residency to any artist looking for the space and comfort to relax and work on their craft. Being here felt like a form of self care I had been missing for a long time.
