Héloise Auvray
November - December 2023
Heloise Auvray (they/them) is a fibre artist and soft sculptor based in so-called Vancouver on the unceded territory of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. They hold a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia with a focus on Visual Arts and Art History. Their practice currently explores themes of the self, the household and materiality of the human body. They particularly work with repetitive and time-consuming processes, with the optic of re-valuing (s)low production.

The Similkameen Art Residency was my first artist residency. After a year-long hiatus in my practice due to the time-consuming nature of having jobs, I needed to reconnect with artmaking. The loghouse was the perfect environment to do so. For two months, I was able to solely focus on reading about art and experimenting techniques. This time allowed me to perfect a work method I could then export back to Vancouver and brought back the joy of being in a studio, surrounded by artists. It offered me a newly gained confidence about my art practice and legitimacy as an artist
